Campaign For Bulgarian Real Estate Ethics

English language magazine Quest Bulgaria has launched a campaign to establish a code of conduct for property agents operating in this fast-rising market, along the lines of existing European protocols.

The Bulgarian property market has been growing apace, especially since the country joined the European Union, and it seems as if a few estate agents have been playing fast and loose, when it comes to professional practise. Some of the things that Quest Bulgaria's campaign aims to curb is property being sold to overseas investors for up to three times its true value, the sale of unregulated land, and false pricing on deeds. The campaign also aims to halt dual property pricing on UK and Bulgarian websites.

"We receive hundreds of emails and letters from buyers, agents and lawyers regarding real estate transactions - the good, the bad and the ugly of what's been happening. It is clear there is desire for a change." explains Quest Bulgaria's Chris Goodall, "Whilst most agents are honest and provide a decent service, there are some who are being very greedy and spoiling it for all, especially the buyers. We want to put a stop to non-accountability and establish a system whereby both real estate professionals and consumers have recourse in the case of any dispute."

Leading Bulgarian law firm GPNG are among the host of local and UK forms supporting the campaign, which aims to generate support for a non-governmental body to align the estate agency business. Lawyer Asja Mandjukova comments, "This campaign is long overdue in response to some of the vicious practices in the estate agency business. This has resulted in a rash of incompetent, so called professional who can make quick money with poor quality of service."
